The film was Phool Aur Kaante and it marked the arrival of Hindi Cinema's new "dark, angry, young man' a title earlier bestowed on Amitabh Bachchan post Zanjeer. Ajay quickly solidified his position as the angry young man with several hit action films, and was categorized as an "action hero'. Being the son of a master action director, it was only obvious that Ajay would excel in action, but he surprised the industry and audiences alike with his comic performance in Ishq and his heart rendering romantic performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
