This versatile superstar has a body of work that is possibly the most impressive in its range and caliber. Born in Delhi on 2nd April, 1969, Ajay Devgan was exposed to films at a very young age and immediately post his graduation, he began directing video films. His first ever introduction on celluloid saw him make a jaw-dropping entry on two motorcycles, a feat one could only expect from the son of legendary action director, Veeru Devgan. The film was Phool aur Kaante and it marked the arrival of Hindi Cinema's new 'intense, angry young man' a title bestowed earlier on Amitabh Bachchan post 'Zanjeer'.
Ajay quickly solidified his position as the angry young man with several great action films. Being the son of a master action director, it was only obvious that Ajay would excel in action, but he surprised the Industry and audiences alike with his superb comic performance in Inder Kumar's Ishq and his emotionally moving performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, exhibiting a range that was truly rare. By then Ajay had proven that there was no genre of cinema which was alien to him and he continued to excel in each of his roles with aplomb. His stellar performance in Mahesh Bhatt's Zakhm fetched him his first ever National Award. His subtle yet hard-hitting performance in Company made him a Ram Gopal Varma favourite and Ajay later worked with Ramu on Bhoot and Aag. His first attempt at non-commercial cinema earned him rave reviews for his performance opposite Aishwarya Rai in Rituparno Ghosh's Raincoat.
In his personal life, he married leading actress Kajol on 24th February, 1999. The next major turning point in his personal life was the birth of his daughter Nysa in April 2003. Contrary to his on-screen image, Ajay is a rather quiet personality but yet a master prankster on the sets of his films.
2009 is a truly great year for the versatile and superbly talented actor as he is working across diverse genres with the leading talent of the country - doing a political powerhouse drama, Rajneeti, with Prakash Jha, a comedy laugh riot, All the Best!, with maverick young talent Rohit Shetty under his own banner, a grand canvas romantic drama, London Dreams, with Vipul Shah, a children's high concept film, Toonpur ka Superhero, starring with his wife Kajol under the direction of an acclaimed national award winning animator, a crime saga that goes back to the Seventies Mumbai under the revamped Balaji banner directed by Milan Luthria, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, and a film with Priyadarshan that he begins under his own banner... a most impressive line-up for a terrific actor who promises the best is yet to come.
