Like many starry-eyed girls before her, Kangana Ranaut too moved to Mumbai to try her luck in movies. She is truly one of the most talented young actors to have entered the Hindi film industry in the recent past. Her honest acting has surprised even seasoned actors. She was offered the role of the female lead in Mahesh Bhatt's Gangster in 2006. Director Anurag Basu had discovered her while she was having coffee in a cafe in Mumbai in September 2005 and instantly signed her up for this movie.
Gangster was critically and commercially successful and Kangana's performance was especially applauded. It is rare for an actor to get such a difficult role in their first film, and even more difficult for the newcomer to carry it off with such courage. But Kangana took to her role of Simran, like a fish takes to water. She is definitely an actor to watch out for as she is not just a photogenic face, but a first-rate actor as well.
Gangster was followed by another acclaimed performance in Woh Lamhe (2006). She also went on to star in Life In a Metro and Shaka Laka Boom Boom. She has, at present, a current offer to star in an US-based film titled 'Between the Night and the Moon, where she is to play a character named Zoon. It is a romantic film, based on Romeo and Juliet. The film, which will be directed by Gilda Pianelli, is set in Kashmir and Miami, Florida. Currently, Kangana is also starring in Madhur Bhandarkar's film Fashion, where she is cast along with Priyanka Chopra.
