She might not have been as good looking as Madhubala but what she had was talent and Mala Sinha utilized that weapon of hers to the utmost. She did not crave for popular heroes as long as she had a point to prove in all the films she did. This is the reason why Mala Sinha is still remembered by many as an actress who was capable of doing anything.
Mala Sinha started her acting career with a Bengali movie called 'Roshanana' in 1952. This Nepali actress became an instant fame and some more movies later she shifted to Mumbai with her entire family in 1954. All her dreams started coming true when she was offered her first Hindi film 'Badshah'. But she could have been typecast in mythological roles had Guru Dutt not come to her rescue. But before this happened, there came 'Rangeen Raatein' with Shammi Kapoor in 1956. This was the beginning of a new Mala Sinha and what people saw afterwards, was pure delight. Guru Dutt put that extra glamour in her career with 'Pyaasa' in 1957. From then on there was no looking back for her. There started a volley of hit films from her like 'Dhool Ka Phool' (1959), 'Haryali Aur Rasta' and 'Anpadh' with Dharmendra in 1962 and that won her undying fame and fortune. Then there was no stopping Mala Sinha with films like 'Gumraah', 'Geet', 'Bahurani', 'Himalay Ki Ghod Mein', 'Aisrain' and 'Do Kaliyan'. She got paired with actors like Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Biswajeet and even her childhood idol Raj Kapoor.
Her many-faceted nature was revealed in 'Aankhen' and 'Maryada' where she needed to wear western tight-fitting clothes. She looked as lovely in them as she looked in a saree. Mala Sinha, the actress, had no inhibitions working with small-time and struggling actors. This is the reason she worked with someone like Amitabh Bachchan during his struggling days.
Mala Sinha might have left the film industry, but her haunting charm and exuberance is still missed by many.
