Already an celebrity back home in Nepal, Manisha Koirala wanted to move out of the shadow of being her father's daughter (the then prime minister of the country) to create an identity for herself.
To fulfill her dream, she flew down to Mumbai, where showman Subhash Ghai roped her in for his new venture Saudagar opposite another newcomer, Vivek Mushran .Inspite of the movie having established stars like Rajkumar and Dilip Kumar, Manisha was recognized.
Her attempt paid off, and she was flooded with offers. Some of her most memorable performances have been 1942 - A Love Story, Akele Hum Akele Tum and Agnisakshi with Jackie Shroff and Nana Patekar.
Inspite of having cameo roles in Criminal and Kachche Dhaage, her effort in the movies were appreciable. Some of her other movies include Mann; Grahan, Khamoshi, Gupt, Dil Se and Raja Ko Rani Se Pyaar Ho Gaya, Company, Market, Paisa Vasool and Tum.
