Mithun Chakraborty

The kind of adulation and love Mithun Chakraborty receives from his fans back home in Bengal is simply amazing. He has a large number of admirers and everyone seems to be born to love him. He is a semi-god to them and this makes Mithun a cult figure.

Mrinal Sen spotted Mithun Chakraborty in 1976 and immediately offered him a role in 'Mrigaya' which won him a National Award. This film had none of his famous pelvic thrusts and that's the reason it took him a couple of years more to establish himself in the industry. He accepted small-time roles in films like 'Do Anjane' with Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha where he had nothing to do but hoot at Amitabh Bachchan. Mithun Chakraborty hit big time in 1979 with 'Suraksha', 'Hum Paanch' (1981) and 'Disco Dancer' (1982) which also saw another dancing machine in him. He started doing family-oriented films like 'Pyar Jhukta Nahin', 'Swarg Se Sunder' (1986) and 'Ghar Ek Mandir' (1989).

Soon after his films started getting negative response, Mithun Chakraborty shifted his focus towards hotel industry. He made Ooty his base and even accepted more of T. L. V. Prasad movies. One can find at least one Mithun film at every theatre every month.
