Raj Babbar was a Delhi stage artist before he was discovered by Prakash Mehra. He wanted to introduce Babbar in films like 'Namak Halal' and "Shakti" but things did not work as well as they would have liked. Babbar was not disappointed. He continued his struggle before he was launched by B. R. Chopra in a negative role.
His first film was "Insaaf Ka Tarazu" (1980) where he was projected as the rapist and cast opposite Zeenat Aman and Padmini Kolhapure. The film became a huge success and Raj Babbar was announced as arrived. But before he could be typecast, he did a variety of roles. He did a series of movies like "Nikaah", "Mazdoor", "Naukar Biwi Ka", "Aaj Ki Awaaz" and "Prem Gee"'. He has a large number of films with second wife Smita Patil like "Bheegi Palkein", "Mera Ghar Mere Bachche", "Shapath", "Teesra Kinara" and "Waaris". Some of his films with other heroines include "Salma", "Jhooti" and "Sansar". His co-stars were mostly Rati Agnihotri, Anita Raaj, Rekha, Reena Roy, Salma Agha, Meenakshi Sheshadari and Dimple Kapadia. He is also a well known face because of the characters that he has potrayed in movies like "Ghayal" and "Aankhein".
There was a movie called 'Karamyodha' which was produced by him. He juggles his time between acting, business and politics.
