What do you think of the music of Dostana…?
I liked the first song of Dostana that I heard which is 'Jaane Kyun'. I told Vishal Shekhar who are the music directors that this is a great number and after a long time there is a number that I have been really obsessed by and I really enjoyed listening to that number. But then I heard 'Khabar Nahin', 'Kuch Kam', 'Desi Girl' and 'Shut up and Bounce' and all the songs seemed to be very very good. 'Kuch Kam' is my second most favorite song. But if you ask me music as whole then I think very rarely do you have five hit songs in an album and I think Dostana has five super hit songs.
Which is your favorite track?
My favorite track is 'Jaane Kyun'. And I believe that 'Jaane Kyun' is the soul of the film Dostana.
What was it like working with Vishal and Shekhar?
I think they are brilliant music directors. They are very contemporary. When they get a brief from the director they know how to regulate the music according to the tempo of the film and that's what they have done. So I think they are super guys.
What made you decide to do this film?
Well, Karan called me and I went. He said Tarun Mansukhani (director) would like to narrate the script to you and I said ok. And as usual I go in ready to say no to every film that I have heard which I do with most of my films, and then I pick up the crazy experimental ones. I went in to hear it, I heard it and I was laughing through the entire narration. It finished and I said that I am not going to judge anything because if I am laughing then the entire audience is going to be laughing. It is a funny film. Then I said I would love to do it. The minute I knew that it was Abhishek in the film with me I just closed my eyes and said I will do it.
Can you tell us something about the character you play?
I play a character called Kunal who is an illegal immigrant in Miami. He is a photographer. He loves women's till of course he has t o pretend to be a gay. His love interest is Mr. Abhishek Bachchan. So that's my character.
Who has done your styling in the movie? How was it working with him/her?
Akki Narula has done my styling in the film. I think Akki is one of the heroes of the film because he has done the great styling for this film. He has been present on the set completely and to see what's happening on every scene and he knew which scene follows what scene. Very few designers know that but he knew exactly the tempo of each scene. If there was any sober scene he knows what colors to give us because it is very easy to go over board with the film like Dostana as Miami is a very bright city, very colorful, very sunny but there are certain scenes that require a little toned down and Akki knew everything so well. He is superb.
What was it like working with Dharma Productions after KAAL?
It's my second film with Dharma. If you ask me in terms of production values I think film culture is very important. Dharma and Yash Raj are two production houses have film culture inculcated in them. So you are a kind of auto pilot when you do a lot of films. You don't have to worry about how the film is going to be mounted, how the people are going to look, how the characters are going to be presented, what the director is going to do, how the film is going to be marketed these things you don't have to worry about. Since you are talking about Dharma, they completely understand how to present a film beautifully. Films are liked or not liked, but you will mark my words and see the opening of the film Dostana when it gets releases. It's only because when you watch the promos today you are excited and you really want to know about little about what the hell Abhishek and John are doing together. So they really know how to present a film. As a layman I want to see this film because I am pretty inquisitive about the relation these two guys share. So they do a great job.
What was it like working with debutant director Tarun Mansukhani?
Well Tarun is very sure of what he wants to do. He will take suggestions from all of us. He will listen to all of us and he will incorporate what he thinks is right. But if he is not sure about something and if he has taken a shot that has been suggested by either Abhishek , Me or Priyanka he will do it. There has been an instance where we have headed back to hotel and he has called us and said "come back the sun is setting and I want to take this shot again." So he is very sure about what he wants to do and that makes us as actors feel very safe. This is the first great film for Tarun Mansukhani. He has done a great job.
The promos of Dostana have generated a lot of reaction from female friends about your look? Did you have to adopt a special fitness regime for this film?
All credit here goes to my physical trainer, whose name is Mike Ryan. He is a personal friend but he is also trained a lot of Hollywood celebrities. He flew down from L.A. to train me for this film. Why I keep insisting that he is been very instrumentalist because he put me on diet and I actually changed after I reached Miami. I transformed after I reached Miami because there is a certain walking out of the water shot that Karan wanted. He said that I don't want you to be very muscular; I want you to have bay watch body because women or men either way find themselves presentable. He said something very simple i.e. what is attainable is desirable, what is not attainable is not desirable. I was put on a special diet, I was not allowed to lift the weight the kind of lifts builder is supposed to lift because we are not out here in a body building competition. But at the same time it had to look esthetically good when I walked out of the water and certain bare body shots and that's what we tried to achieve.
What was it like working with Priyanka Chopra?
Oh! Priyanka is a super co star. This is my third film with her. In salaam e Ishq we weren't pair opposite each other. She is my co star in Dostana now. She is just absolutely wonderful, absolutely professional and very confident. So it's a pleasure working with her. She is a very helpful co star as well.
How was it working with Abhishek after DHOOM?
I love Abhishek, but not is a Dostana sense. But I think he is a great human being. Abhishek is superb. We share a great chemistry. We don't compete with each other in fact we compliment each other. You will see it when you watch the film and you will come out of the film saying that very rarely have we seen two men sharing this kind of chemistry that these two men have shared. And Abhishek keeps joking that after Shah Rukh and Kajol it's going to be John and Abhishek. It's really an amazing chemistry that we have shared in this film and it comes across the screen so honestly because the camera catches everything, you cannot lie to the camera. If there is a sense of insecurity or competition then it will show. In our case it's completely an honest and natural chemistry.
The film is about friendship, what role does friendship play in your personal life?
There are few friends whom I consider as close as, or closer than my family. So I think friendship is something very dear and near to me and I live for my friends. The concept of friendship is alien concept outside some of our countries but still it's a beautiful concept that lot of us adopt because it makes the world a better place to live in.
This is a Dharma film production distributed by YRF, its coming together of two big production houses, what do you have to say about it as you are currently working on YRF?
Well like I say that the Dharma film distributed by YRF or YRF distributed by YRF itself, its like sitting in a Rolls Royce, just enjoy the ride. You have to promote the film but you don't have to do much outside of that because….how do I say it, it's like if you are passing by in a Rolls Royce people are going to look. You are going to enjoy the ride and people are going to look at the car and say oh! WOW! What a car!!! And I think that's the advantage of working with film houses like this. I am happy that I have done a Dharma film and I am happy that I will be doing a Yash Raj film and I think I am fortunate that they both have been gracious in having me in their film.
Your shoot experience in Miami and other locations?
Miami is my most favorite city in the United States of America. I love it because of the weather and people. It has got a very South American influence there. It's just a great place and I think also the shooting conditions were great. My cast was superb. May be that's also the reason that is clouding my desire to say that Miami is a good place. I think working in Miami was absolutely wonderful. Outside Miami we shot a part of Dostana in Bombay but we created Miami in Bombay just for some patch work for about five days otherwise the entire film was shot in Miami.
Any memorable incident during the shoot of the film?
Dostana had only memorable incidents, nothing outside of it. If you do not know then I would like to let you'll know that the biggest prankster in Abbhishek Bachchan. He makes the most noise on the set, he is extremely mischievous. But he is one hell of a good guy. He doesn't have a bad bone in his body. But he could make you cry with the pranks he plays and thankfully I was on his good side. So everyday and every shot was a memorable moment.
