The music of Gulaal is so different than what we hear, did you encounter any difficulties in composing them?

'Gulaal' has been my first attempt for music to Indian cinema. The music was done very swiftly and easily. All the eight songs were written and composed in seven days and some of them are my old theatrical improvised songs. I had full liberty to compose as the director knew that I understood it perfectly as to what the content of the movie is and what kind of songs are needed.

How did the movie 'Gulaal' come to you?

There was s struggling music director and me sitting in one room. The director actually came to listen to him. When he was done I just made him listen to one song and then was requested to play some more. When he heard my compositions he really liked it and offered me the movie 'Gulaal'.

Which is your favorite track in 'Gulaal'?

I have produced the music. I can't name any one song.

The songs and the music of 'Gulaal' is composed on a very serious note. Would you like to comment on that?

Well, I feel when a person is composing the music, the person should first be convinced himself. Any generation would listen to songs which are worth listening, let it be serious or funny or romantic. When a person thinks differently, it shows in his work and if it is liked by people. The trend is made and followed. I believe the music of the movie is worth appreciating and will definitely leave a mark.

If we talk about sound, what kind of music do you prefer, live band or the way it is done in the industry?

It's all about requirement of the song and the mood. Live band has its own charm. But still sometimes you require metallic sounds.

Do you aspire to work with any particular director?

Nothing like that. I take up whatever comes to me and take it up if I think I can make a difference there. I don't plan. I just follow my instinct.

Can you tell us who all have contributed to the songs of 'Gulaal'?

Two songs are sung by Rekha Bharadwaj, two are sung by me, while two songs are sung by me and a combination with someone. One song is sung by Shilpa Rao.

You have also acted in the movie 'Gulaal'? So are you an actor as well?

I have actually been trained in acting. I just take up what comes to me. I follow my instinct. If I think I can do it I just take it up. If I have done things once and done it well, I try and do it again.
