What made you come back to acting? You were a Union Minister. You are an active and high profile M.P. of your party (BJP). You must have been very busy. How did you find the time to come and act again?
You know the saying once an actor. I joined politics not to be a professional politician but to genuinely do some good work for the people, social service you can call it. I can say with my hand on my heart that I have given my best as a politician and I will continue to. But somewhere I always wanted to come back and act. I was waiting for the right time. That time came when I had done most of my work in my constituency. I have worked sincerely for Gurdaspur, my constituency in Punjab. I have work to get them an Airport in Pathankot. I have got them new railway line. I have tried a solved most of the major problems and my work will continue. Then I was busy as Minister of State for tourism which kept me active all the time. I did everything possible to put India on a pedestal in countries where they new very little about India. I work very hard for my party but after be where out of power I had the time. I couldn't act when I was a Minister. I can act as long as I am a Member of Parliament. I knew I had the ability to pursue only one profession and that was acting. I was capable of doing some challenging roles, not the father or father in law or typical villain's role. I wanted to do something substantial.
Where you getting offer and feelers while you're active in politics?
So many of them but somehow I didn't have the time or the roles that were offered to me were not really worth making the effort.
Will you be able to manage both film and politics?
I think I am capable. I will do justice to both fields successfully and sincerely. I will not cheat myself or my people.
How has your decision been taken by your constituency?
They are very happy for me. In fact, will be surprised to know that they are the once who have been encouraging me. They say they would like to see me acting in film. I have not given them any reason to complaint. That is why they have let me reach a place in politics which I could never imagine. They would not have elected me thrice if they had no faith or trust me.
What kind of changes have you seen in the industry?
Fabulous changes. There is so much new that happening. There so many new director, so many new actor and so much development in every aspect of film making. It is great thinking about working under this new condition and with these dynamic new generations. They are so organized, discipline and well behaved in general, I don't know about the exception but all those whom I have met have come across as people who are interested in taking Hindi film to new heights.
People in the industry say that you star politicians have not done anything for the industry which has made you what you are?
How can they say anything like that? It was my govt. (the BJP Govt.) which gave film making the status of an industry. It was mainly because of the efforts made by my colleagues in parliament. We are forever willing to work for the industry which has given us so much. But the industry must come to us or anyone in power as one industry and not as individuals or just one association. They must collectively make us and all those who take decisions aware of their problems. How can we let down the industry?
What do you think about yours sons, Akshaye and Rahul as actor?
I feel really very proud. Akshaye has grown into one the finest young actor and I am saying this very objectively and Rahul has made a name for himself in the west. They are perfectionist and professionals. They want perfect scripts. They want to work in a discipline and orderly way. No haphazard working for them, that their true. They have given me all the reasons to see a very bright future for them.
Would you do a film starring you and your sons?
Why not? We are all professional actors. We are game provided someone comes up with the ideal scripts. My friend, Johnny Bakshi has come up with an idea to be directed by Vikram Bhatt but the script has till not come up to our satisfaction. We are open to anyone who comes up with a script that will appeal to all of us.
Will you just continue acting or…?
Basically, I would be looking for some very good roles to make up for all the time that I have lost.
I later hope to produce films and ultimately hope to direct films. I am learning all the time. I have a sound knowledge of the technical aspects of filmmaking and I can take off as a director anytime but I am waiting for the right time because like I always say I only do things when I like to do them and things which I really like.
And one last question, what place does Bhagwan Rajneesh have in your life now?
The same place that he always had. He is my Guru and I live his teachings and will always do.
