LOVE AAJ KAL releases this Friday and if the film succeeds in the way it is widely expected to, writer-director Imtiaz Ali is all set to find himself in the top bracket of directors. We caught up with the man who is surprisingly calm as ever even as his film is just hours away from release.Talk with Imtiaz Ali and you immediately start expecting some chartbuster music, courtesy the legacy you have left behind in JAB WE MET and SOCHA NA THA!
(Laughs) In fact Pritam and I had a standing joke throughout the making of the music of LOVE AAJ KAL. We were sure that the first line of every review, whether movie or music, would definitely have a JAB WE MET reference to it. We couldn't have troubled our minds by continuously reminding yourself of the work we had done earlier. Every movie has its own unique demand so we had to completely forget all about JAB WE MET.
Was it practically feasible?
You have to take a conscious call for doing something like that. You can't sit and decide that chalo, let's make a hit film or hit music. Or let's come up with something that is going to make everyone go gaga over it. You can't pin point on what would be successful. Diplomatic as it may sound but the basic fundamental remains that one has to work honestly and stay true to the requirement of the film. You need to be clear about the story you want to tell your audiences rather than worrying about what is popular and what is not in today's time. In any case, what is going to work today may not necessarily work tomorrow.
Was that the reason why you chose to play safe and tell the story of today as well as yesterday, hence the title LOVE AAJ KAL?
(Laughs) Nothing like that actually. See, we keep hearing stuff from people elder to us that 'hamare zamane mein yeh hota tha aur woh hota tha'! They say that there is so much of corruption and traffic today that it has seeped into love as well. How many dads have told their sons that emotions were purer in their times! This is what Rishi Kapoor also feels who is totally surprised with the contemporary relationship shared between Saif and Deepika.
What makes him feel so surprised?
Saif and Deepika have a very practical way of looking at their relationship and Rishi Kapoor believes that when it comes to love, you can't really be so practical. He questions Saif that how could he carry on a relationship as if it was a scientific formula. This is when he tells his own story from 1965 and the narrative moves from London to the lanes of Delhi and Kolkata. So here we see this man who had such love for his woman Harleen Kaur that he travelled thousands of miles just to catch a glimpse of hers.
