Not surprisingly, one did not expect much out of out of this film and it lived up to expectations. The film is funny in a stupid sort of way and does manage to tickle your funny bone in places. But this is not one of your subtle comedies, it is the loud slapstick variety, which may turn out to be good time pass for some.
The film's story is about a bunch of characters who set out to deliberately make a flop movie. A film producer, Raj Chopra (Paresh Rawal), finds himself heavily in debt because all his previous films have been flops. Then there is Anand Pawar (Kunal Khemu), a chartered accountant with a zero bank balance, because of his honesty. Anand has a girlfriend Neha (Soha Ali Khan), who is dying to make it as an actress but is unable to do so because of her looks. Anand and Raj team up and hatch a plan to make produce a flop film.
The idea is to raise a lot of money for the project and then make the movie on a shoe string budget, thereby saving on money. By ensuring that the film is a flop, the duo gets to keep huge amount they have raised for the venture. So they produce a film, which is a hash of Sholay, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Gadar and Lagaan put together. They get the film scripted by a writer player by Johnny Lever and hire actor Aryan Kapoor (Sonu Sood) for the lead role. Titled 'Solay Se L'Gaan Tak,' the film turns out to be a huge hit and Anand and Raj are now faced with the prospect of sharing the profits with the financers. The film ends with them resolving to make another movie.
The idea of a film within a film gives the director more scope to fill the film with lots more ridiculous stunts and spoofs. The slapstick, over the top brand of comedy continues right till the end of the movie, with no respite.
The film, which has been directed by Umesh Sharma, however, despite its poor and tacky production values, manages to keep the audience hooked. This only happens because of the apt choice of actors. Paresh Rawal and Johnny Lever are quite perfect for their roles and take slapstick to an almost new level. In fact, even actors like Kunal Khemu, Sonu Sood and Soha Ali Khan take up the challenge and put in very credible performances. Sonu, specially is quite good as the moody, tantrum throwing filmstar. The film's music has been composed by Sajid Wajid, and it is quite in keeping with the tone of the movie.
The film has a decent enough premise for a comedy. There is enough potential for laughter and the director does not let any opportunity go by. But,yes, at the end of the day, Dhoondte Reh Jaoge remains a mindless caper, which manages to entertain.
