Fruit & Nut

The good part about a small budget film like 'Fruit And Nut' is that it can be experimental or in this particular case just mental. Kunal Vijaykar gets to you a wannabe comedy which might make you laugh once in a while but fails to entertain you. The film revolves around Jolly Maker (Cyrus Broacha), who is a pure idiot and his mundane life and how he goes on to become a national hero because of a few events in his life. The film promises to be a mad cap comedy and stars actors like Boman Irani, Mahesh Manjrekar, Rajit Kapoor in main roles with Dia Mirza added on for some glamour quotient. Boman Irani plays a mad man Maharaja Harry Holkar, who kidnaps Dia Mirza (Monica Gokhale), whilst Mahesh Manjrekar plays Khandar, her boss. Jolly is an idiot and works for Khandar, whilst he silently loves Monica. One day Monica gets kidnapped and co incidentally Jolly saves her and becomes a national hero.

Such kind of nonsensical comedies obviously do not have any continuity or connection in the story, and expects the audience to leave their brains at home, however 'Fruit And Nut' almost turns out to be a as animated as a cartoon flick but fails to impress or tickle your funny bone. The only saving grace of the film is Mahesh Manjrekar, with some distorted Hinglish dialogues which actually make you laugh, like "Ashes yaani do Aishwariya Rai, Angelina Jolly, Paani yaani Deepa Mehta" and stuff like that. It's probably Mahesh's inimitable style that sets you in splits. Each character in the movie has its own pet peeves like Mahesh likes to talk in English, Rajit is always gorging on his favorite pizza and Boman keeps asking people "Nashta Kiya….breakfast?", probably these are the only few things which make the film stand out and makes you want to remember it. The songs are just thrust into the movie, including an item number by Diya, making the film all the more draggy and long. All characters are etched out to be like a caricature however turn out to be disappointing.

It is not that small budget films are a no no for audience, with no action and low budget production value, Kunal could have done better if more emphasis was given on the comic value in the output, even if he did not wish to have no connection or continuity in the story. It becomes difficult for a movie to go on for two hours with nonsensical one liners, after all cinema isn't Fully faltoo. Mahesh is good in the movie and so is Boman, while Diya and Rajit are average and Cyrus overacts and makes you hate Jolly Maker for being so stupid instead of getting sympathy votes. A wannabe 'Bheja Fry' which fails miserably and falls flat on its face. Nothhing great to watch out for except for the last five minutes before the climax.
