Sanjay Gadhvi films have always boasted of good music whether it was his directorial debut Tere Liye which may have bombed at the box office but had a couple of good numbers as did Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. Of course the music of Dhoom and Dhoom 2 were chartbusters proving Sanjay Gadhvi's penchant for good music. He repeats Pritam for his next film Kidnap, which in spite of looking like a film which doesn't have much room for songs, surprises with a few great tunes.
The first song of the album is Mit Jaaye which doesn't sound like a conventional Pritam number, because it is actually composed by guest composers Sandeep and Sanjeev Vyas. This belongs to the genre of songs which usually feature in Sanjay Gupta films; western, techno influence which make for great numbers even after repeated listens. Sandeep Vyas's voice is well suited for this number which going by the promos may not feature in the film except in the background or as a montage. The tune and arrangements are so overpowering that at times you tend to ignore the lyrics and vocals all together. Mit Jaaye reminds you of Musafir and even Jaanbaaz from the 80s. This song will surely find its way into the music charts and is a great listen.
Hey Ya is a hit from the first note of the song. A very Pritam type of composition with electronic arrangements, it's a number full of attitude and makes for an overall great racy number. Picturized on Minissha Lamba, the visuals and choreography of the song make it even more endearing especially since we are seeing Minissha in a number like this for the first time in her career. Suzy Q gives the song the fresh, young feel which it demands and her voice also suits Minissha well. This one is an instant chartbuster.
You are hit with a total change in pace with Mausam which appears after two pacy numbers. Mausam is a soft melodies track sung ever so sensuously by Shreya Ghoshal. We don't hear such melodies from Pritam too often, but this is a very pleasant, likeable number which will gain popularity once the film releases.
Haan Ji instantly reminds you of the Sanjay Dutt – Sonali Kulkarni song Maaf Karo from Mission Kashmir even though Haan ji is less on melody and heavier on arrangements and heavy beats. Adnan Sami makes this an enjoyable song, but somewhere the lack of melody takes away from the song and makes it just about an average track.
The Arabian feel of Meri Ek Ada Shola reminds you of the number picturized on Sanjay Dutt in Deewar. Sunidhi Chauhan, Sukhvinder Singh and Akriti Kakkar come together for this song which looks like it will be a situational item number, possible the one which is rumoured to be picturized on Malaika Arora Khan and Amrita Arora. The song is a nice listen but lacks anything really original and is one of those songs you don't mind but you don't hit repeat for either.
Hey Ya has a house remix while Mit Jaaya has a rock version both which are as likeable as the original.
Overall Kidnap has two chartbusters in Mit Jaaye and Hey Ya and one more hit is Mausam while Haan Ji and Meri Ek Ada Shola are also pleasant numbers. This album doesn't have a single track which makes you cringe or reach for the fast forward button which nowadays is quite an accomplishment.
