I'll tell it straight... Omkara is not the best adaptation of Shakespear's Othello that I have seen.
This film has its good spots and its bad spots... It is short sweet and tart, but the film lacks the depth of the original play and lackluster performances by Bipasha Basu and Vivek Oberoi ruin the fun...
The Good: The ending is great. A beautiful portrayal of the demise of characters and a true tragedy in a small scale. Omkara is Vishaal Bharadwaj's best. Ajay Devgan is effective and so are Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, and Konkona Sen Sharma. A little bit of precision goes a long way in this film, and the shots and editing are impressive for a film of such low budget.
The Bad: Bipasha Basu's performance is atrocious. Vivek Oberoi is very annoying and the only scenes in which both work is in the song "Beedi Jalaile" and we all know that that song was the only reason why Bipasha was even in this goddamn movie!
Bottom Line: Omkara is a good dark film, with its flaws but hey, no one is perfect right? Watch it... love it or hate it, Omkara will lead the way for more Shakespearean adaptations to come.
OMKARA IS THE BEST FILM OF 2006 ,ALONG WITH RANG DE BASANTI ,LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI AND DOR . IT IS THE REMAKE OF SHAKESPEARE'S OTHELLO . IT SHOWS THE REALITY OF LOVE,JEALOUSY , HATRED AND OBSESSION . AJAY DEVGAN STANDS OUT AS OMI SHUKLA A.K.A OMKARA . KAREENA IS A REVELATION ,SHE INFUSES LIFE IN DOLLY MISHRA WITH EASE ,IT IS ONE OF HER BEST AND FINEST PERFORMANCE TILL DATE . VIVEIK OBEROI IS EXCELLENT , IN SOME SEQUENCE HE IS LOUD, BUT DOES A GREAT JOB . WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT AN ACTRESS LIKE KONKANA WHO PROVED THAT SHE IS BEST IN EVERY ROLE WHETHER IT IS GLAMOURIZED OR DE-GLAMOURISED . SHE IS AWESOME AND IS IN GREAT FORM AFTER PAGE 3 AND MR & MRS IYER ,ALTHOUGH SHE ACTED BRILLIANTLY IN LATTER 2 FILMS . IT IS SAIF ALI KHAN WHO STEALS THE SHOW WITH HIS DEMONIC ROLE OF LANGDA TYAGI . DESPITE NOT STYLISH , HE ENACTS WITH GREAT AFFORT AND FORCES YOU TO HATE HIM . SONGS ARE FOLK BUT MELODIOUS , THE SONG "O SAATHI RE " AND " BEEDI JALIYLE" IS PICTURISED OUTSTANDINGLY . GREAT JOB VISHAL, WE ARE WAITING FOR YOUR NEXT MASTERPIECE OF SHAKESPEARE.
India's take on Othello proves to be less than what Shakespeare would have wanted
