Its difficult to actually pinpoint what Ram Gopal Varma is trying to say in this film... but my guess would be he's adapting the Godfather, and I would also say that he did an impressive job with that!
The Good: Francis Ford Copolla's "The Godfather" is one of the greatest films ever made, and I would never expect RGV to make a film as good as that... but he did do a valiant effort and I congratulate him. The performances by the three mains (Amitabh, Abhishek, KK Menon) are very impressive, had Black not come the same year, Amitabh would have won Best Actor for this film anyway. Abhishek is a little less impressive but gets by because he does not have much dialogue. KK is outstanding! His poise, and expressions are absolutely stellar and his speech is dangerously menacing...
The Bad: We all know Amitabh is idolized as a hero in India... but dont you think putting him as a villian would have done "the Godfather" justice? If RGV was really trying to capture the essence of Subhash Nagre, he had to realize that Nagre was not a hero by any means... he was a villian and a rogue. The reason Copolla had so much success with his film was becuase he came to the realization that Vito Corleone was on the opposite side of the law even though he thought of himself as "above" the law... much like Bal Thackeray. Had RGV come to this realization before writing the script, this film would have been much more successful and much more appreciated.
Bottom Line: The acting/directing is there, but I felt as if RGV missed the point... Nagre is not a hero, no matter what your political or moral views are and his death at the end of the film was something that needed to be done but wasn't done... and that is what brought the downfall of this film and Sarkar 2.
It has always been said that Tamil cinema is qualitatively superior to those produced by Bollywood. However, this notion is a decade old, as now things have changed with Bollywood starting to... - behindwoods
The Godfather, Bal Thackeray, or Both??
