Today is Bollywood’s biggest Friday, so far, of 2007. Two star studded flicks backed by big production houses hit theaters today to end the one month long cash drought for the industry.
Right from mid-September, things have been very dismal for Bollywood with all the releases sinking without a trace. Only Priyadarshan’s Dhol managed to grab some attention but was then overpowered by the T20 World Cup.
Today Priyadarshan returns with a bigger and better offering, specially made for the festival crowd; comedy, songs, dances, thrills, suspense and everything else you would want from a movie on a festive weekend. Bhool Bhulaiya, the third remake version of Manichithrathazhu is his Eid gift. For the less informed: Manichithrathazhu is nothing but the Malayalam original that served as inspiration for Apthamithra in Kannada and later Chandramukhi in Tamil. Starring, Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja and regulars of the Priyadarshan team like Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav the movie is more than sure to have a bumper opening and knowing the impact that the story has we can more than bet on Bhool Bhulaiya becoming a big hit this season. The fact that T-Series has produced and Eros is marketing the movie just adds value.
The other biggie vying for audiences’ attention today will be Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag –the journey of a woman. This Pradeep Sarkar movie after his highly appreciated debut movie Parineetha. He returns again with a female-centric plot with Rani Mukherjee playing two very diverse roles in the movie. The movie also has Abhishek Bachchan, Konkana Sen and Kunal Kapoor to add to the star attraction. The movie is not expected to get off to a flyer at all places but multiplexes are expected to receive it well. Not the routine festive season entertainer, Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag will have to be patient for the public to endorse it as a good one. The Yashraj banner surely knows the game they are playing and will have a strategy firmly in place for this out of the ordinary movie. So, it’s Eid and Navarathri all during the same weekend and its Akshay vs. Rani, T-Series vs. Yashraj. Pick your winner.
