Vegam, the film debut of S.Ve. Sekhar’s son, Ashwin Shekar, hit the screens just a week ago. Vegam, inspired by the Hollywood thriller, Cellular, starring William. H. Macy and Kim Basinger, was directed by David. R. Ellis and written by David Cohen and Chris Morgan who had also co-written Phone Booth.
Interestingly, another Indian movie that has drawn inspiration from the same film is, Speed, directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Surprisingly, this movie, which is being released across India today, will not grace the theatres in Chennai.
In Vegam, the performance of Khushboo, who plays the role enacted by Kim Basinger in the original, has come in for a lot of praise from all quarters. Ashwin Shekar’s dancing skills and stunts are also praiseworthy but somehow his voice modulation skills need some honing.
Speed is a multi-starrer, which has Zayed Khan, Urmila Matondkar, Aashish Chaudhary, Aftab Shivdasani, Sanjay Suur, Sophie Chaudhary, Tanushree Datta, and Amrita Arora. A huge star cast indeed! Zayed Khan plays the character played by Chris Evans, who had delivered a commendable performance in the original. Knowing Mukesh Bhatt’s filmmaking style, we can be sure there is going to be lots of skin and action. With Bhatt’s recent failures, he is banking on Speed to revive his fortunes. Hope Speed doesn’t leave the theatres just as fast as it arrived.
