Mumbai: The octogenarian wife of legendary music composer S D Burman and mother of music director R D Burman, Meera Dev Burman who was in news recently for languishing in an old age home, passed away on Monday morning. Sunday Oct 21 1:25 AM
Eighty-five-year old Meera was an accomplished singer, poet and dancer. And not many know that she too was a music composer.
Born in Bangladesh and later settled in Kolkata, it was in the late 30s that she joined the Sur Mandir music school run by SD Burman, and subsequently fell in love with him. They married in 1938.
But after recording and writing few songs, she withdrew from the limelight and opted to assist her husband.
She worked with Burman senior on films like Tere Mere Sapne, Anurag, Abhimaan, Chhupa Rustom, Prem Nagar, Us Paar, Chupke Chupke, Mili and Tyaag.
Though, the honour came late, she was recently felicitated by the Tripura government on the occasion of SD Burman's centenary celebrations.
