Not many of this generation would have heard of the name Vittalacharya, except the followers of the horror movies in Tamil cinema.
This director’s biggest hit was his Telugu film “Jagan Mohini”, in the year 1978, starring Narasimha Raju with the then onscreen vamp Jaya Malini playing the heroine.
Jagan Mohini was dubbed in Tamil the very same year, and it went on to become a huge success. In fact, during a time when computers were unheard of in the film industry, this movie had some stunning visual effects. Vittalacharya’s name became synonymous with many such movies that he continued to direct.
With the remake fever catching on in Tamil, Lakshmi Movie Makers have decided to remake this movie. The film will be directed by cinematographer-turned-director K. N. Vishwanathan. Namitha has been approached to play the role of Jaya Malini, as it was felt she could essay the role more appropriately, considering the fact that she is today’s screen scorcher. An ideal find indeed! Lakshmi Movie Makers have even procured the rights of the original from Srinivasan who happens to be the son of late Vittalacharya. With computer graphics of the highest standards now available, guess they can use it to the fullest and do justice to the original, which was a landmark film of the horror genre.
