Her first film in Tamil, Kuthu, with Simbu, didn’t help build her career except that it gave her the tag ‘Kuthu’ Ramya.
A few films that followed didn’t do much to her flagging career in Kollywood. All the offers that Divya got were the ones that banked on her glamour and left no room for her to demonstrate her histrionic skills.
She returned to Kannada films where she tasted success but wasn’t content. Now, back in Kollywood with Polladhavan, rechristened as Divya, she did find that eluding success. Divya does have some glam outfits in Polladhavan but not the sleazy kind she had been offered earlier. Her performance is also well received.
This came as a shot-in-the-arm for this Bangalore beauty, who now looks svelte and is being offered more daring and meaty roles but she has now decided against playing roles that demand glamour. Her current project is Tharamba, a film on AIDS awareness, directed by Santosh Sivan, where she dons the role of a sex worker opposite Prabhu Deva who plays a lorry driver. Speaking about the role, she said that this role, though that of a sex worker, is not sleazy. Her role in Vaaranam Aayiram spans over 14 years from age 14 -28 for which she had to experiment on the make up front. In Kannada, she will be seen opposite Upendra and Ganesh in Magenjumaru for which shooting is underway. Guess the name change has proved to be lucky, now on it’s her acting skills that she needs to bank on.
