Mumbai: Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is in India along with composer A R Rahman to promote their latest film Elizabeth the Golden Age. Starring Cate Blanchett, Clive Owen and Geoffrey Rush, the film has received mixed reviews in the UK and US, just like his previous period drama, Elizabeth. Thursday Nov 15 10:55 PM
Reacting to the accusations that this film distorts historical facts about the Queen, Shekhar says that it's just his interpretation of a historical figure.
"Its not history. I don't know why people say that. It’s Shekhar Kapur's interpretation of Elizabeth with the studio, the scriptwriter and of course Cate Blanchett. The Virgin Queen story is actually a myth. No one knows for sure do they?" says the filmmaker.
Shekhar is also convinced that he faces harsh criticism because he is an outsider.
"If Martin Scorcese were making the same film no one would have questioned his take. In my case, I am the Bollywood guy and in fact, they are afraid of Bollywood and Chinese cinema,” says he.
As for his many announced projects like the films on Nelson Mandela and Gautam Buddha which have yet to take off, he confesses to have put them in the back burner because of creative differences with the studios. But the filmmaker is still very keen on making Paani, which he claims has a budget of almost a $100 million.
And for those looking forward to yet another Mr India from Shekhar, he promises to make a big Bollywood film very soon. But we hope those promises get translated into some actual movies.
