Sudhir Mishra's forthcoming film, Khoya Khoya Chand is set in the film industry of the fifties as everybody knows. Hence getting the correct look and feel of the era was very important for designer Niharika Khan and required intensive research. But she was helped by Begum Para, an actress of yesteryears.
Incidentally, Begum Para is Niharika's mother-in-law, so when Niharika was asked to design the look of the characters, she came running to her. Niharika asked her to help with information about the era. According to Begum Para, she could not give the designer her own example as she generally played only negative or vampish roles and sported a bold look in most of her films. So she helped her using Madhubala and Nargis as examples. She also called up Madhubala's family for information and Niharika managed to get a lot of photographs of Madhubala from that era. Niharika also sat with Waheeda Rehman and went through all her albums and photocopied many of her old photographs. Incidentally, Begum Para had done the costumes for the Dilip Kumar starrer Bairaag. Besides the clothes, she helped with tips on the hairstyle and make-up of that period. Actress Sharmila Tagore also pitched in with sarees from her wardrobe for Soha's character and also helped with the colours for Soha's costumes.
