Mani Ratnam and his movies are never to be taken lightly. Even his least successful venture will have something that catches the eye. He is yet to win a National Award for direction, but that does not in any way undermine his contribution to Indian cinema. Some of his much admired contributions include legends like Agni Natchathiram, Mouna Ragam, Anjali, Nayagan, Dil Se, Alaipayuthey, Kannathil Mutham Ittal and plenty more.
Mani's most recent contribution, a biopic based on the life of Dhirubai Ambani, Guru, was quite a stunner. In the lead was the handsome couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. A.R. Rahman composed some mesmerising tunes and Rajiv Menon filmed the movie showing every spelendour, capturing the essence of the story with the able guidance of the ace director. And now, the three of them are proud recipients of the V. Shantaram Awards for Best Composer, Cinematographer and Director, respectively!
