Goa: It’s the 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), but the festival in Goa missing its usual dose of Bollywood glitz and glamour.Tuesday Nov 27 10:45 AM
Gafla and Dharm are two of the Hindi films being screened at the box office at IFFI, signaling the absence of the usual Bollywood presence at this year's International Film Festival.
While most festival regulars are happy that regional cinema is getting its fair share of attention with Bollywood taking a backseat, some filmmakers are of the opinion that the festival is just not the same with out it's Bollywood glam quotient.
"The glitz and glamour is part of the festival. The festival is dull this time around,” says filmmaker Sudhir Mishra.
“Bollywood is essential here. A festival is about festivities and its about celebration and Bollywood will only add to that,” says filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.
But unlike last year's Bollywood heavy schedule the plan was to have a sedate and serious opening ceremony this year and to keep it simple and short.
"We have made the festival like it is done in most festivals abroad,” says Directorate of Film Festivals Director, Neelam Kapoor.
But after actor Shah Rukh Khan's presence at the opening ceremony, the possibility of actor Amitabh Bachchan showing up for the premiere of Rituporno Ghosh's The Last Lear at the festival could definitely help the missing Bollywood masala.
Too much or too less of Bollywood: It’s a judgment the Directorate of Film festival will have to face every year, but with only two Hindi mainstream films being screened at the festival, the Hindi film buff would be certainly disappointed.
