In the recent past or rather ever since the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees issue started to hit the headlines it has been the feeding ground for script-hungry filmmakers.
Even Mani Ratnam touched this issue in his film Kannathil Muthamittal. Seeman the director who makes movies that address social issues has vociferously expressed his ire at films being made on this issue.
When addressing the press recently, he said that most movies based on Sri Lankan Tamils exploited the issue and only ended up using it as the backdrop for their stories, which often dealt with more mundane matters.
He even hinted that films on these issues depicting romantic interludes between the refugees and other aspects that portray their life in poor light should be avoided altogether. Lashing out at such movies, he opined that rather than making half-baked attempts at highlighting their plight, one should refrain from making such films, as denigrating the cause would only end up ridiculing their struggle.
