Five things we learnt at the movies in 2007Saturday Dec 29 2:50 AM
Akshay Kumar has the Midas touch: No actor's films got worse reviews this year, but he turned Namaste London, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyya into whopping hits, and now Welcome seems well on its way to super success. Also who can forget how he stole the show with that walk-on cameo in Om Shanti Om?
Rani Mukherjee needs to take more risks: She didn't venture out of her so-called 'safety net' this year, but little did she expect the Yash Raj banner and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to give her the biggest duds of her career. Tara Rum Pum tanked, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag stank, and Saawariya didn't even stay in the cinemas long enough for her nail polish to dry. Perhaps it's time to stick her neck out a little, work with newer directors with edgier scripts.
Beefcake sells just as much as cleavage: Move over Mallika Sherawat, the new sex-symbols are here. Shah Rukh Khan's six-pack dominated everyone's attention for the most part of the year, and with Ranbir Kapoor's towel song in Saawariya washboard abs had officially replaced silicone implants in the ogle order.
All Govinda needed was a new partner: His comic timing, his unique dancing style, his endearing smile all in place, who knew that all Govinda needed to get his mojo back, was to partner with his anti-thesis - super-dude Salman Khan. Though they did need more than a little help from the Will Smith-starrer Hitch. With a sequel on the cards, Govinda's stars are evidently smiling again.
The only Khan they recognise in Hollywood is Irrfan Khan: Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman delivered blockbusters this year, but it's Irrfan Khan who's gathering Oscar buzz for The Namesake, it's Irrfan who walked the red carpet at Cannes with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for A Mighty Heart, and it's Irrfan who landed a role in Wes Anderson's Adrien Brody-Owen Wilson starrer The Darjeeling Limited. Hollywood ahoy for Irrfan Khan!
