Anurag Kashyap's search for Chandramukhi and Paro for his forthcoming film, tentatively titled Dev.D is over. While newcomer Kalki will slip into the role of Chandramukhi, Paro will be played by another newcomer Mahi.
Dev.D is written and directed by Kashyap and is a modern-day on Sarat Chandra's novel Devdas. The film is being produced by UTV Spotboy. Confirming the selection of Kalki and Mahi, Kashyap said that both girls suit their roles perfectly. He discovered both of them through auditions. While Mahi is believed to have come on board rather early, it took them some time before they could settle on Kalki. While in the classic, Devdas is hailed as the ultimate lover, who drowns himself in drink after he loses his love and drives himself to destruction. In Dev.D, however, the character to be played by Abhay Deol will be portrayed as the hypocrite who drowns in self-pity and is a man who cannot stand up to himself. According to sources, Dev.D will break all typecasts of the original novel including its principal characters. The film goes on the floors in the next few weeks and will be shot in London, Punjab and Delhi, beginning with London. Kashyap plans to finish the film by April. It is a start-to-finish affair.
