LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Dogs attending the world-famous Crufts dog show this year will have the luxury of specialist "pooch beds" courtesy of a British hotel chain.
Following the success of a pet bed trial, firm Travelodge -- which expects around 300 dogs to stay in its hotels over the week of the competition in Birmingham -- has produced a dog and cat sized replica of its king-size bed.
It comes complete with mattress, pillow and duvet, with pets also having the option of a small snuggling pillow based on the chain's "cuddilow", a person-sized pillow for lonely single guests to cuddle up to.
Officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest dog show, Crufts will open on Thursday at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
"Crufts is a big occasion in the dog calendar and we want to acknowledge the importance of this event," said Travelodge "sleep director" Leigh McCarron.
"Therefore we have extended our range of pooch beds to ensure our two and four-legged customers get their beauty sleep in order to look and feel their best for the big occasion."
Dog owners will have to pay an extra 10 pounds ($19.79) to have the bed installed in their room. After Crufts the beds will be dispersed around the firm's hotels around Britain.
Travelodge said a survey of 2,000 British pet owners showed 45 percent allowed their pets to sleep in their beds, even though 42 percent complained that they were then woken by their animals in the middle of the night.
One in five female pet owners said their four-legged companion got more attention in bed than their partner, with half reporting they gave their pet a goodnight kiss every night.
Perhaps unsurprisingly therefore, one in 10 men surveyed said they regularly argued with their partner about sharing the bed with an animal.
