It may have taken more than 25 years for the Indian film industry to wake up to the potential of a sci-fi film but the wait seems to be paying off. The promo of Harman Baweja's LOVE STORY 2050 is indicative about the readiness of the Hindi film industry to warm up to adapt it. The getups have also been adapted with the same objective. The seriousness of the lead actors to prepare themselves for the role is manifest from Priyanka Chopra's readiness to paint her hair red to adapt to the role. Instead of relying upon a wig to do the job, Priyanka Chopra was ready to paint her hairs in red colors for the second role when the film shifts to 2050. This is probably for the first time that a female actor has got an opportunity to enact a role one positioned in the present and the other one in the future.
If one were to trace the attempts on the part of the directors to dwell into the future or in the realm of the unknown the first definitive step was taken by Rakesh Roshan with his films with KOI MIL GAYA and KRRISH in which first serious attempts were made to bring on to the silver screen the entity from the other world. The interaction with the future was however in the terms of knowing how the villain would die as it happened in KRRISH and that was the interface with the future. LOVE STORY 2050 seems to be positioning the complete film in the future.
The inclination to peep into the future has been attempted more in the cases where the star sons are enacting the roles, as it happened with KOI MIL GAYA and KRRISH and would happen in LOVE STORY 2050. The producers and directors do not leave any stone unturned to successfully launch the career of their sons and to make them stand apart from the crowd and to catapult their career recourse to future is the better option. DRONA of Abhishek Bachchan is also trying to do the same.
Future as a genre has seldom failed to cast a mesmerizing spell on the box office of its feat and LOVE STORY 2050 should also do the same. Cinema after all is celebration of the spectacle, to tantalize and remove the ground from below the feet, and the ability to take you to the realm of the unknown. It is this journey into the unknown that is now sought to be capitalized by invoking the future which would make these films a box office success. Future after all is favorite pass time of us Indians.
