A lot of write ups by some scribes have gone ahead and equated Chitrangada Singh to the late Smita Patil. A few even went to the extent of proclaiming that she is the true inheritor of the great Smita Patil legacy!Well, there may be many who must be wondering who Chitrangada is and what she have done to be bestowed with such an honour. Well, her only claim to fame is Sudhir Mishra's HAZAARON KHWAHISHEN AISI, where Chitraganda's acting came in for a lot of critical acclaim. It is another matter that the film was a commercial failure. After that, Chitrangada went into a self exile, due to personal reasons and is now returning to the big screen with Onir's SORRY BHAI.
The best person to decide whether Chitrangada is the true inheritor of the great Smita Patil legacy is the living legend, Mr. Shyam Benegal. The reason is obvious. It was Mr. Benegal who was instrumental in bringing out the best in Smita Patil (a former Doordarshan news reader) and making her a name to reckon with in the world of arthouse cinema. So we put across the question to Mr. Benegal, who after pondering for a while replied - Chitrangada Singh is no Smita Patil! But he went on to add that she needs time to be evaluated viz-a-viz Smita Patil. He concluded by saying that once Chitrangada's forthcoming films release, things will become crystal clear.
