The Week That Was At the Box Office

The box office blues continued this week as well. The release of Shashi Ranjan's Dhoom Dadakka and Ashim Samanta's Don Muthuswami has done nothing to change the season at the box office, which is experiencing a severe drought. Even the release of the children's animation film Ghatothkach, did not create any a stir at the box office despite it being the holiday season. Ghatothkach had an opening of around 20 to 30 per cent in most places. One expected that this animation feature would fare better. The fate of the other releases, both comedies, mirrored that of the animation flick. Dhoom Dadakka and Don Muthuswami can be safely termed as flops. Of the two, Don Muthuswami probably fared better because of Mithun Chakraborty. But it was not the multiplexes which benefitted but the single theatres. But even then, Don Muthuswami's opening was as low as ten to 15 per cent in most places. Dhoom Dadakka did even worse, with reports of shows being cancelled in certain places. Jannat, which released last week, seems t have fared quite well in its first week. But the collections of Bhootnath saw a further dip in the second dip. Jimmy is definitely in its way out. What will come as good news is that a small film like Shaurya completed 50 days at the box office last week. Next week, we will be seeing another star son, Sikander Kher, making his debut in Woodstock Villa, directed by Hansal Mehta.
