The word violin immediately brings the images of Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan and Dr. Subramaniam, the iconic Carnatic musicians and expert violin players. Tamil Nadu is blessed to have produced such eminent musicians.
Recently, the University of Sheffield, UK, awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music to Dr. Subramaniam, the only musician to have performed/ recorded Carnatic and Western style music in collaboration with popular musicians like Yehudi Menuhin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Ruggiero Ricci.
Dr. L. Subramaniam, who was a licensed general practitioner, gave up medicine to follow his calling - Music. He has also composed for films like Salaam Bombay, Mississippi Masala, and was also featured as soloist in Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha and Ismail Merchant's Cotton Mary.
Today, he is the founder-director of Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival, the biggest global festival held in India every year. The festival has brought some of the greatest artists from around the globe together.
