This was a wonderful weekend for film makers, a long weekend and two releases. Fortunately, both films had fairly decent openings and have managed to earn a good initial for themselves. But the film, which holds the edge is definitely Siddharth Anand's Bachna Ae Haseeno produced by Yash Raj Films. It definitely pipped Rumi Jafferey's God Tussi great Ho at the box office, despite the presence of stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan.
The opening for both films was like we said quite decent. Bachna Ae Haseeno opened very well at the multiplexes specially. However, the collections were average in the single theatres and small towns. Ranbir Kapoor seems to be big draw, where the movie is concerned. This is a kind of film which is likely to do very well in the metros. God Tussi Great Ho, on the other hand, had an average start, specially at the multiplexes. It is expected to do better in the smaller theatres. It is expected to maintain its average rating. Last week's release, Singh Is Kinng, opened literally with a bang, but then seemed take a dip in its collections. If it opened at 80%, then the film dipped somewhere between 30 to 40 per cent during the week. Last week's second release, Aditya Datt's Good Luck, has proved to be a disaster. Next week at the box office, one will see four films, all of different genres, making their claim at the box office. First of all there is Ram Gopal Varma's horror film, Phoonk; then there is Mumbai Meri Jaan, which is about the Mumbai local train blasts. Then there is Maan Gaye Mughal e Azam, which is a comedy. And lastly, there is the children's film, My Friend Ganesha II. Quite an interesting bag of films there for next week.
