This was a busy week at the box office as it saw four films release on the same day. Incidentally, all four films belonged to different genres, Mumbai Meri Jaan, Phoonk, Maan Gaye Mughall e Azam and My Friend Ganesha 2.
First, Ram Gopal Varma directed Phoonk, opened with collections of 70 to 80 per cent in Mumbai and some parts of the country as well. Seeing Varma's dismal track record at the box office in recent times, this was a surprise. But matters evened out after this and collections of the film fell after the first couple of shows of the movie. The initial buzz around the film, created by the promotions, managed the good opening, but the thanda response to the film was visible after the first couple of shows itself. Nishikant Kamat's Mumbai Meri Jaan, despite receiving a lot of critical acclaim, has not had a very encouraging opening. But this is a word, whose collections only improved as the weekend progressed. Word of mouth has done the trick and the film's prospects are looking up despite a very poor initial. Sanjay Chhel's Maan Gaye Mughal e Azam too was a dispappointment. It managed an initial of only 15 to 29 per cent, which is only expected to go down steadily. My Friend Ganesha had an even worse opening.
Of last week's releases, Siddharth Anand's Bachna Ae Haseeno is cruising along in most Indian cities. But Rumi Jafery's God Tussi Great Ho is faring well only in Mumbai. The collections of Vipul Shah's Singh Is Kinng have started sliding from the second week onwards. Next week, the box office will again see a host of films vying for attention. First of all, there is Chamku from the Deol camp, starring Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra; then there is the comedy C Kkcompany; Rock On, which sees Farhan Akhtar debut as an actor. Finally there is Mukhbir. So it promises to be a very busy weekend again.
