This week saw the release of films like Neeraj Pandey's A Wednesday, and Santosh Sivan's Tahaan, two films which received a good amount of critical acclaim and surprisingly have also done well at the box office. There was also debutant Kunal Shivdasani's Hijack, which failed to make an impact.
Following the decent showing of Mumbai Meri Jaan, whose collections picked up due to word of mouth and critics' reviews, A Wednesday, which stars Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher, opened with collections ranging between 30 and 40 per cent. But the collections picked up on the weekend following the positive reviews that the film received. The film is expected to continue its good showing. Shivdasani's Hijack starring Shiney Ahuja and Esha Deol did not manage a good opening, with an initial ranging between 20 and 30 per cent. Tahaan has been much appreciated but its collections do not reflect this. Among last week's releases, Abhishek kapoor's Rock On continues its steady run at the box office. It is doing just as well on weekends as it is doing on weekdays, with some shows going house full as well. But the same cannot be said for the likes of Chamku, C Kkompany and Mukhbir, who have had a disappointing run at the box office. The releases lined up for next week, include Vikram Bhatt's 1920, which is supposed to be a spookfest, starring Adah Sharma and Rajneesh Duggal. There is also Rituparno Ghosh's The Last Lear, which is about an ageing Shakespearan actor, played by Amitabh Bachchan. The other actors in the cast include Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal. The third release is scheduled to be Ru-Ba-Ru, which stars Randeep Hooda and Shahana Goswami of Rock On fame.
