First time directors Tarun Mansukhani and Shashant Shah had very different experiences with their films Dostana and Dasvidaniya, both of which released last week at the box office.
While Dostana, which starred Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham, seemed to have passed audience approval, Dasvidaniya did not. The week before had seen releases by two first time directors as well, Saurabh Kabra with EMI and Kaushik Ghatak's Ek Vivaah… Aisa Bhi. But to come back to Dostana first, the film opened very well at multiplexes not just in Mumbai, bit all over the country. The film's weekend collections were in the range of 80 to 90 per cent. The film did not fare so well at the single theatres and smaller towns though, registering collections of around 40 to 50 percent only. It is expected to keep up its good work at the multiplexes. As for Dasvidaniya, it did not fare so well. This Vinay Pathak starrer had an initial of only 30 per cent. As for Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion and Rohit Shetty's Golmaal Returns, despite their great run, both films are now experiencing a drop in collections, ranging between 40 to 50 per cent. Subhash Ghai's multistarrer, Yuvvraaj, will be releasing this week. The film stars Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan, and is a family musical drama.
