One had assumed that it would have taken a Shah Rukh Khan to bring the audiences back into the theatres. But Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi came and hasn't really managed to shake and move audiences as was expected. In fact, if trade reports are to be believed, then it is Aamir Khan, who may turn out to be the mover and shaker of year 2008.
Like the year before, Aamir's film comes at the fag end and seems all set to create history. Even though Ghajini is not a home production, Aamir has not been stingy with promotions. He has gone the whole hog to market the film, even if it meant shearing the locks of his many fans in Delhi. He has done all that he can to push the film. In fact, many would say that he has gone a little overboard. But it all seems to be paying out. Ghajini, which will be having paid previews across the city tonight and hit the theatres tomorrow, is turning out to be a money spinner. The film will be opening to 50 per cent advance bookings. And to top it, it has a long weekend in which it can actually rake in the moolah. This will surely came as great news to Aamir, as he has a stake in the film's profits. Ghajini has been sold at Rs 90 crores. To be fair to the audiences, there has hardly been any exciting fare churned out by the Hindi film industry. Therefore, this kind of mania can just be expected. Audiences are hungry for something absorbing to sink their teeth into, and Ghajini may just be it. The recession and terror blasts have dampened spirits considerably and what is needed is a great Hindi potboiler to bring smiles back on the faces of millions. SRK just about managed to thaw the chill, and by the looks of it, Aamir will reap the benefits.
