Subhash Ghai's Black & White may not have done stupendous business when it released last year in March, but it did get a lot of critical acclaim. At a recent screening of the movie at the Pune International Film Festiaval on Sunday, the film received a standing ovation from the audience which consisted of quite a few foreign delegates.
Ghai was understandably overwhelmed by the response that he has received at the festival for his movie. Many of the foreign film delegates praised the film for its bold and thoughtful treatment of terrorism. " It's a universal subject and deserves to be seen by every nation," said an Israeli director at festival. Speaking at a press conference the following day, Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of the festival said, "This is the finest Hindi film I have seen in a long time. It had a profound effect on me, specially as I watched it after the terror attacks in Mumbai. Kudos to director Subhash Ghai." Noted film director and director of the festival, Jabbar Patel spoke very highly of newcomer Anuraag Sinha, who played the lead role in the movie. "We can see a huge star of tomorrow here, after watching his outstanding performance in Black & White," he commented. Speaking at a press conference on 'Cinema N Terrorism' organized at the festival, Ghai spoke at length on how cinema can moblise the thinking of hardliners. Reacting to a question by Israeli script writer Pinchas Eden, who said that he loved the film but wanted top know from Ghai, how these kind of films can reach the terrorists. Ghai replied that education was the only solution to terrorism. "I would love to screen Black & White in schools and other educational institutions, all over the country," he added.
