Deepika Padukone would be one of the rare few film stars who would have been given in an opportunity in her career to enact double roles in two subsequent films that she has enacted so far in her career, first being OM SHANTI OM, and now CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA.

If a review of the films that have female stars in the double role were to be made, it would be found that they would be having either of the streaks to justify the double roles. First itching for providing a double role to the female stars in general has been in the genre of films of suspense, where the elements of suspense is internalized in the double roles, and based upon the mistaken identities. This genre came to be personified in the various roles that Sadhna enacted in her career, and she was literally sine quo non of this genre identified with the films like WHO KAUN THI, GUMNAM, and MERA SAAYA, etc.

The other genre of double roles which became a unique adaptation in Hindi films was the portrayal of two personalities in a female, one being meek and submissive, docile and obedient, the other being flamboyant, boisterous, tom boyish and defiant. It was experimented for the first time in a big way in Dilip Kumar starrer BAIRAAG, where Saira Banu with a rare flourish was able to enact both the roles. The same was followed with a candor by Hema Malini in SEETA AUR GEETA, and in a less successful manner in JAAN-E-MAN. Sri Devi did the same in CHAALBAAZ.

The female stars however were provided with lesser opportunities to enact double roles as compared to their male brethren, though as a child artist they were given ample opportunities to enact double roles in various films. Priyanka Chopra in LOVE STORY-2050 also did a double role, but in the present crop of female actors Deepika Padukone indeed is fortunate as she would be one of the rare few actors who has been given an opportunity to play a double role in a career, at the initiation stage itself.

Nothing else, but for the sheer fact that Deepika has got a double role to play, it should be a double treat for her fans to watch her in CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA.
