SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - He is not exactly joining the family business but Weston Cage, son of Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage, is coming pretty close, joining forces with his father to create a comic book.
At the pop culture expo Comic-Con this past weekend, Cage and Weston, 16, debuted their comic book "Voodoo Child" that tells of a teenager murdered 200 years ago then revived with special powers in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
"My dad and I both grew up with childhood imaginations fertilized by comics," Weston said on Sunday at the Comic-Con International convention. "It's pretty radical to get to do your own at 16."
Nic Cage, 43, has starred in a wide range of films from action flicks such as "National Treasure" to art-house films like "Leaving Las Vegas," for which he won an Oscar.
But the actor is also well-known as a lover of comic books and he recently starred in "Ghost Rider," based on a popular comic series.
Cage currently is in development on a new movie called "The Sadhu," or "The Holy Man," based on Virgin Comics' title of the same name, and he said the idea for creating a comic book of his own came up while working on "The Sadhu."
The actor said he immediately thought of Weston, who also loves comics, and together the pair went to an "idea session" where Weston offered his thoughts on "Voodoo Child."
Weston said he and his dad spend part of the year living in New Orleans, and they love the unique mysticism and culture there. He said the idea for "Voodoo Child" came naturally to him and his father because of their love for the city.
"I grew up around comics because my dad loves them," said Weston. "When we started talking about ideas for this story, I had really detailed characters and images in my mind."
"Voodoo Child," is the story of Gabriel Martin, a shadowy, bi-racial adolescent with a Medusa's head of dreadlocks.
Gabriel is revived in post-Katrina New Orleans to fight corruption, which is personified by the owner of a construction company who is descended from a man involved in the boy's murder years ago.
But even though Cage loves comic books and Hollywood, he said he won't be playing Gabriel in a movie anytime soon.
"He's more like a young Lenny Kravitz in Weston's mind," Cage said.
The six-book "Voodoo Child" series is published by Virgin Comics. The first issue was released earlier this month.
