The recently released Little Zizou saw graphic novelist Sarnath Banerjee, filling in for the character of Imaad Shah, who plays a would be graphic artist in the movie. The sketches in his notebook in the movie were done by the Delhi based author, whose brief was to recreate the inner world of Imaad's character. Director Sooni Taraporewala also included sculptures by Arzan Khambatta in her movie too.
However, Little Zizou is not the first movie to use art like this. There is also Ketan Mehta's Rang Rasiya, which is based on the life of the late painter, Raja Ravi Verma, which will be due for release soon. However, Imaad was lucky that Sarnath was able to mentor him, which was something that was not available to actor Randeep Hooda, who is playing the role of Raja Ravi Verma. The painter passed away in 1904 and the half finished canvases used in the film have been taken from students of the JJ School Of Arts. This connection with art was also evident in Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par, as Aamir's character played an art teacher in the movie. The hand behind the portrait of Darsheel Safary in the movie has been painted by artist Samir Mondal, whose work has been recognised by quite a few of those who saw the film. Up on the anvil is a film called 8x10 Tasveer by Nagesh Kuknoor, which uses photography. The recent trend perhaps dates back to the maverick MF Hussian, who created this space for art in cinema with films like Gaja Gamini and Meenaxi. If this trend is anything to go by, then it seems that art is being able to create new spaces for itself in Hindi cinema.
