The Oscar-award winning cast and crew of Slumdog Millionaire will donate 500,000 pounds to Plan India, a non-profit organisation working for the welfare of the underprivileged children in India. The money should allow thousands of youngsters to get an education and access to good healthcare, said producer Christian Colson in an announcement in London on Thursday.
The donation will support Plan India's development programmes in slum communities in Mumbai on early childhood care, education, water, sanitation and health. The fund is expected to help over 5,000 children of the city.
Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai, it is only right that some of the movie is put back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference to children's lives, director Danny Boyle said.
Anil Kapoor, who donated his earnings from the film to the organisation, said Slumdog Millionaire is a film which epitomizes the positive spirit of children. The film's success is an inspiration and a way forward to improve the lives of the most vulnerable children of Mumbai, he added.
