Tamil Films dominate National Awards

National Awards, though announced late due to legal tangles, are finally out. Earlier, the Supreme Court issued a stay order on disclosing the national awards as one of the jury members of the selection committee filed a petition that the entire process was too biased. With the Court vacating the stay the winners have been announced.

They are as follows: Best Feature Film - Kaalpurush – Memories in the Mist (Bengali), directed by Budhadeb Dasgupta. Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment - Rang De Basanti (Hindi), directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra. Best Actor - Amitabh Bachchan (Black – Hindi) Best Actress - Sarika (Parzania - English) Best Direction - Rahul Dholakia (Parzania – English) Best film on social issues - Iqbal (Hindi), directed by Nagesh Kukunoor. Best Supporting Actor - Nasseeruddin Shah (Iqbal) Best Supporting Actress - Urvashi (Achhuvinte Amma - Malayalam) Best Film on Family Welfare - Thavamai Thavamirunthu (Tamil) Best Audiography - Nakul Kamte (Rang de Basanti – Hindi) Best Editing - P. S. Bharathi (Rang de Basanti – Hindi) Best Cinematography - Madhu Ambat (Sringaram – Tamil) Best Screenplay Award - Prakash Jha, Shridhar Raghavan and Manoj Tyagi (Apaharan - Hindi) Best Art Direction - C. B. More (Taj Mahal – An Eternal Love Story) Best Costume Designer - shared by Anna Singh for Taj Mahal — An Eternal Love Story and Sabyachi Mukherjee for Black Special Jury Award - Anupam Kher (Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara) Special Effects Award - Tata Elexi (Anniyan – Tamil) Best Child Artist - Sai Kumar (Bommalata – A Bellyful of Dreams)

Best Music Direction - Lalgudi Jayaraman (Sringaram –Tamil) Best Lyrics - Barguru Ramachandrappa (Thaayi – Kannada) Best Male Playback Singer - Naresh Iyer (Rang de Basanti - Hindi) Best Female Playback Singer - Shreya Ghoshal (Paheli - Hindi) Best Choreography - Saroj Khan (Sringaram - Tamil) Best Children’s Film - Blue Umbrella (Hindi) directed by Vishaal Baradwaj Nargis Dutt Award for the Best Feature Film on National Integration - Daivanamathil (Malayalam), directed by Jayaraj Indira Gandhi Award for the Best First Film of a Director - Parineeta (Hindi), directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra Best Non-Feature Film - Riding Solo To The Top Of The World (English), directed by Gaurav A Jani. Best Film Critic Award - Baradwaj Rangan Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation - Thutturi (Kannada)

The best adjudged films in different Indian languages are: Tamil: Aadum Kothu, directed by T V Chandran Assamese: Kadam Tole Krishna Nache, directed by Suman Haripriya Bengali: Harbart, directed by Suman Mukherjee Hindi - Black, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Kannada: Thaayi, directed by Baraguru Ramchandrappa Malayalam: Thanmatra, directed by Blessy Marathi: Dombivali Fast, directed by Nishikant Kamat Oriya: Kathantara, directed by Himanshu Khatua Punjabi: Baghi, directed by Sukhminder Dhanjal Telugu: Bommalata – A Bellyful Of Dreams, directed by Prakash Kovelamudi
