National Awards, though announced late due to legal tangles, are finally out. Earlier, the Supreme Court issued a stay order on disclosing the national awards as one of the jury members of the selection committee filed a petition that the entire process was too biased. With the Court vacating the stay the winners have been announced.

Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment - Rang De Basanti (Hindi), directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra. Best Actor - Amitabh Bachchan (Black – Hindi) Best Actress - Sarika (Parzania - English) Best Direction - Rahul Dholakia (Parzania – English) Best film on social issues - Iqbal (Hindi), directed by Nagesh Kukunoor. Best Supporting Actor - Nasseeruddin Shah (Iqbal) Best Supporting Actress - Urvashi (Achhuvinte Amma - Malayalam) Best Film on Family Welfare - Thavamai Thavamirunthu (Tamil) Best Audiography - Nakul Kamte (Rang de Basanti – Hindi) Best Editing - P. Bharathi (Rang de Basanti – Hindi) Best Cinematography - Madhu Ambat (Sringaram – Tamil) Best Screenplay Award - Prakash Jha, Shridhar Raghavan and Manoj Tyagi (Apaharan - Hindi) Best Art Direction - C.
