Right from the times when the Hindi films came into vogue the tradition of gurus and their disciples have been portrayed in vivid detail on the silver screen. On the eve of Guru Purnima today, it would indeed be an interesting detour to trace this route by associating it with the element of humor. After all, a relationship that is based on humor between a guru and his disciple would have a more successful association with the audience. So let's trace this relationship, which may be either through the films or as a hit pair:
CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI: One of the evergreen films that Hindi cinema has ever produced here the role that Ashok Kumar had etched was more as a guru than as an elder brother teaching his siblings, Anup Kumar and Kishore Kumar and Kishore Kumar to box, to repair cars and trying to keep away from the woman.
PADOSAN: May be Kishore Kumar took a leaf out from his elder brother's role in CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI and became one of the most famous Gurus whom nobody have any gumption to offer their tribute to.
JIGAR: Ajit and Paresh Rawal in their contrasting ways, more so Paresh Rawal copying the mannerism of the politician Laloo Prasad Yadav in the humorous but in a menacing manner underlined what havoc they can bring about if they decide to.
SHAMMI KAPOOR AND RAJENDER NATH: It was one of the most successful pairs ever to grace the Hindi cinema spanning their sojourn from the era of Black and White films like KASHMIR KI KALI to JUNGLEE and provided a comic relief without being bawdy in any manner.
AMITABH BACHCHAN and RAM SHETHI: This pair literally evolved and became a hallmark of all the films that Prakash Mehra made from LAWARIS onwards, including SHARABI, NAMAKHALAL etc, and it indeed was surprising that this pairing was never used by any producer director apart from Prakash Mehra.
MUNNA BHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI: In the modern times if there ever was a relationship between a disciple and his guru that was based on the notion of blind worship, it was the pairing of Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi that was developed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The pairing needs to carry on further and it is hoped that the aficionados of Hindi cinema would see MUNNABHAI CHALE AMRICA shortly.
KADER KHAN and SHAKTI KAPOOR: No compilation of on-screen guru-disciple pair would be complete if the films in which Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor enacted. Such was their legendary fan following that there names would be included in nearly all the hit films from mid seventies to early nineties, when they started losing their charm. Included in this category would be all the films made by D. Rama Naidu like HIMMATWALA, TOHFA, MAWALI etc.
