Thank God it’s Friday

Hi people! How are you? So are you ready with your heavy purses to take a theatre trip this weekend? Let’s start rolling as we have five new movies to deal with. Kollywood looks bleak with no releases this week too. And do remember that I will be discussing only about the English, Tamil and Hindi movies, which are released in Chennai city.

I will start with the Hindi release Budda Mar Gaya. Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal and Rakhi Sawant star in this very crude comedy movie with umpteen numbers of double meaning dialogues. Budda Mar Gaya is for those with a strong liking for such genre of movies and I recommend it for those who wish to see an adventure with a dead man. Now a biggie and this is an English movie. A dubbed version is expected very soon. After last week’s King Khan now it’s the turn of the Macho Khan to take over with his first direct English movie, Marigold (we are not referring to tea time biscuits). This is a romantic comedy about an unsuccessful English actress trying her luck in Bollywood. Now this should be interesting. Moving on to Hollywood. The first in question is “Hot stepper.” I really don’t know why they changed the name of the movie from “Stomp the Yard” to Hot stepper? May be the movie is so bad that they feared the audience may not show up if called in the original name. But half the people hardly know the name. I don’t see the point! Could it be due to astrological significance? Whatever it might be, the movie does not pass muster. The consoling part is it has some real cool dancing.

Now for the biggie. This is sure in the runner up position for this week’s coveted Pick of the Week. This year’s biggest non-sequel summer blockbuster, “Transformers.” It is directed by Michael Bay, the biggest and the most successful commercial director in Hollywood right now. And the movie’s executive producer is none other than Stephen Spielberg. Transformers dubbed version in Tamil is also being released to cater to the Tamil audience. The movie is definitely going to have a good word of mouth but the marketing push for getting a flyer like Pirates or the Spiderman is clearly missing. Now for the Behindwoods pick of the week - Little Miss Sunshine It has been almost a year since this movie was released and it also got a few Oscars. A pity that it is being released so late over here. Still the movie is a blast. It’s a story about a dysfunctional family on a road trip.

Little Miss Sunshine is not for the people who expect two hours of laugh-your-heads-out kind of movie, but a movie where you can smile and keep smiling till you get out of the theatres. The reason for this movie to work lies in the acting department. Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, Steve Carell and last but not the least the Oscar contenders Abigail Breslin as Olive and Alan Arkin as her grand father. Abigail as the dancing little angel must be seen to believe. So a thoroughly enjoyable movie with superb acting, but releasing after such a long time since its US premiere would clearly affect its Box-office collection. Verdict – Thank God it has been released!
