Convention and Ram Gopal Verma have never gone together. Ramu is probably never capable of making a sweet little film. But there are at least two kinds of films that he absolutely revels in making. One is his gangster underworld fare like Satya and Company, while the other is the horror genre. He managed two of his big hits, Bhoot and Phoonk with this genre. The director now gears up for his next release, Agyaat, a horror thriller.
After the debacle of Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag, Ramu seemed to have lost touch with his audience. But he seems to have recovered fast enough from that disaster and has moved ahead. But the stigma of remaking one of Hindi films' most successful movie, Sholay, is yet to leave him. However, he has gamely taken on all the criticism while going ahead with his job of making films. Currently, the director is looking ahead to the release of Agyaat. Later this year, his next film, Rann, which stars Amitabh Bachchan and Ritesh Deshmukh, is up for release at the end of the year. There is jot much that has changed with the man. He still continues to mentor his heroines first there was Urmila Matondkar, then there was Antara Mali and now there is Nisha, sorry, Priyanka Kothari. Anyway, to come back to Agyaat, the film is about the life of an ordinary person trapped in extraordinary circumstances. Unlike the fantastic play of sound, which added to the chills in Bhoot, this times Ramu promises to rouse fear in his audience just with the camera angles. It should be interesting to see if he can deliver on his promise.
