One does not know whether Bob Morley's ''song of redemption'' at any point of time had an influence on Gulzar, but in film after film where the subject is youth he writes one song that portrays the songs of existentialist dilemma of the youth in the most succinct manner.

These songs however are not songs of despair but they also have a ray of hope imbedded in them, and the song ''Dhan Te Nan'' in KAMINEY is no exception to the premise. KAMINEY provides an opportune moment to have a re-look into these songs of redemption which still warms the cockles of young and not so young, whenever it is played out.

MERE APNE: In all probably with ''Koi Hota Jisko Apna'' and ''Haal Chaal Theek Thak Hai'' from MERE APNE. It was probably the first film where the angst of youth despaired with unemployment, was brought out in distinct relief with this film. Set to the music of Salil Chaudhary, the importance of film also lay in the fact that it was for the first time that Kishore Kumar sang under the baton of Salil Chuddar, acknowledging the singing prowess of Kishore Kumar.

AANDHI: First political film with hard hitting message directed by Gulzar himself and set to music by Pancham, its song ''Aali Janab Aaeye Hain'', is one of the pithiest comments about the political situation of the country, and here youth is again used as a symbol to question the political system.

KHATTA MEETHA: Basu Chatterjee's film's song ''Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai'' again is a song that has hope but is also succinct summation the daily struggle middle class has to endure on a daily basis. Though this film was made in 1977, the situation more or less remains the same.

KHUBSOORAT: In this 1980 film Gulzar again brought out a song ''sare niyam tod do'', questioning the existence of rules through which life is sort to be governed and it was again Pancham who scored the music for this song of redemption, so to say.

NAMKEEN: In this 1981 film, which again had score by Pancham, the song ''Rah Pe rehte hain''... was again a song that summed up the dilemma of life'' life is road and road is life''.

MAACHIS: After passing away of Pancham, the zest to set the audience on fire through energetic songs went out into a limbo state, till the advent of MAACHIS which was produced and directed by Gulzar and he chose Vishal Bhardwaj, who emerged as a perfect replacement for Pancham. The song: Chod Aaye hum wo galiyaan''. Again the frustration and the hope could not have summed up in such succinct manner as it was done by Gulzar in MAACHIS.

ROCKFORD: Gulzar again created the magic of hope through his song ''Aasma Ke paar shayad'' set to music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, it again reminded of the magic that Gulzar came to patent about the struggle between existence and the quest for hope.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE: The song ''Jai Ho'' which gave the first Oscar to India set to musical score by Rahman is again a song of redemption and hope with the pulsating energy brought out by the efficiency with which Sukhwinder sang the song.
