Actor Sanjay Dutt has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court. The actor, who is currently at Pune's Yerawada Jail, will not be released today. But if the jail authorities receive a copy of the bail order by 5 pm, he may be out of jail today. A bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan granted the bail till the TADA court in Mumbai provides him with a copy of the judgement.
But it's not time to rejoice as yet as the interim bail is only a breather for the actor as he will have to surrender once he receives a copy of the judgement. According to reports, Sanjay could get a copy of the conviction order by September. The Supreme Court also said that Sanjay will have to report to nearest local police station once a week. Once the actor receives a copy of the judgement, he can apply for regular bail. Convicted last November on charges of possessing illegal fire arms in the run-up to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Sanjay was sentenced to a six-year jail term on July 31 by a TADA court. The court took into consideration the fact that he was on bail since October 16, 1995 till July 31. The Supreme Court said that the actor's passport will remain with the trial court and he will not be allowed to leave the country without its permission. The Court has also granted interim bail to five others accused in the case. It includes Sanjay's friend and partner-in-crime Yusuf Nulwalla.
