With the fasting month of Ramzan from the coming weekend, we are likely to have the smaller ventures releasing during the next month or so. And this Friday has Akshay Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Mahesh Manjrekar, Rehan Khan, Bhavna Pani starrer FAST FORWARD, the Milind Soman, Hrishita Bhatt and Naseer Khan project SHADOW and Madhavan's much delayed SIKANDAR. From the list only the last mentioned (SIKANDAR) has some potential while the remaining two, FAST FORWARD and SHADOW, have little or no prospect. In most circuits, KAMINEY will still prove to be more than a handful for the new releases.Quite expectedly, Vishal Bhardwaj's Shahid, Priyanka and Amole starrer, KAMINEY, embarked on a very good start, wherever it released. The collections improved during the weekend, though some fall was noticed in the smaller circuits like C.P. C.I. on Sunday itself. Of course it is now well known that KAMINEY could not release in Bombay-Thane and Pune during the last weekend due to the Swine flu scare, resulting in closure of cinemas and lost close to 4-5 crores on account of that. The good news is that from Monday the film has opened in Bombay-Thane and the response has been great. However, trade feels that the 40 crore KAMINEY will have sectional appeal and so it looks difficult that it will be able to recover its huge investment. But thankfully indications are to the contrary, even during the weekdays! KAMINEY has also done superbly in the US (for a Shahid solo), grossing $726,834, though it's on the lower side in the UK with a gross of and#163;111,954.
Meanwhile the other release of the same week, Rumi Jaffery's Fardeen, Tusshar, Genelia and Prachi starrer, LIFE PARTNER too suffered a loss of 2-2.5 crore due to non release in Bombay-Thane and Pune. The film did release on Friday all over barring the mentioned places to an ordinary start, though it picked up quite well as the days progressed. The response after its release in Bombay from Monday has been heartening. Unfortunately, trade does not predict a great run for the film. LIFE PARNER has also done poorly in the Overseas, grossing $49,898 in the US but a much better gross of and#163;89,521 from the UK.
Checking out Ram Gopal Varma's AGYAAT, the film has not really been appreciated, perhaps due to its radical climax and lack of face value. The film has failed despite its low costs, though the losses will be minimal, thanks to the South Indian dubbed versions.
Moving on to Satish Kaushik's Ruslaan and Sheena starrer, TEREE SANG, the film did show some steady numbers during the week. A section of the audience patronized the film based on good feedback.
